SBBT is seeking a Website & Social Media Content Creator

Do you have an interest in swallowtail butterflies and the passion, skills and commitment to become the Website & Social Media Content Creator of the Swallowtail & Birdwing Butterfly Trust (SBBT)?

The role is open to any applicant, recognising they must be available for meetings in the UK online and occasionally in person.

The position is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, but necessary expenses may be claimed in line with Charity Commission guidance.

Read the full role description below.

Website & Social Media Content Coordinator

Location: Remote / Home-based
Commitment: Flexible, with hours to be agreed
Role type: Volunteer
The person will if they are interested become a member of the Board of Trustees

About the Trust

The Swallowtail & Birdwing Butterfly Trust is a UK-registered conservation charity dedicated to protecting swallowtail and birdwing butterflies and their habitats around the world.

Working with conservationists, researchers, local communities and partner organisations, the Trust supports practical conservation projects, promotes scientific understanding and raises awareness of these remarkable and often threatened butterflies.

Purpose of the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative and well-organised individual to manage and develop the Trust’s website content and social media presence and e-newsletter Papilio!.

The role will help communicate the Trust’s activities, share conservation news and stories, engage existing supporters and reach new audiences interested in butterflies, biodiversity and environmental conservation.

The successful candidate will work closely with Trustees and project partners to ensure that the Trust’s online communications are accurate, relevant, engaging and regularly updated.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Website Content Management
  • Maintain and regularly update content on the Trust’s website, www.sbbt.org.uk.
  • Publish news articles, conservation project updates, events, photographs and other relevant material.
  • Work with Trustees and project contributors to obtain new content and keep existing information up to date.
  • Ensure that website content is clearly written, visually engaging and consistent with the Trust’s objectives.
  • Review existing pages periodically to identify outdated information, broken links or opportunities for improvement.
  • Help improve website navigation, accessibility and search engine visibility in collaboration with any technical support providers.
  1. Social Media Management
  • Manage the Trust’s existing social media accounts and help develop its online presence.
  • Create, schedule and publish regular posts featuring butterfly conservation – with a focus on swallowtails and birdwings, Trust activities, scientific discoveries, events and relevant environmental news.
  • Source and select engaging photographs, videos and other visual content, ensuring appropriate permissions and credits.
  • Promote Trust initiatives, including World Swallowtail Day, conservation projects, fundraising activities and public engagement events.
  • Monitor comments and messages, responding appropriately or referring enquiries to Trustees.
  • Identify opportunities to grow followers, encourage interaction and reach new audiences.
  1. Content Planning and Creation
  • Develop and maintain a simple content calendar covering website updates and social media activity.
  • Liaise with Trustees, scientific advisers, conservation partners and project leaders to gather stories and information.
  • Translate scientific and conservation information into accessible, interesting content for a general audience.
  • Identify opportunities to celebrate conservation achievements, highlight threatened species and explain the importance of protecting butterfly habitats.
  • Maintain a library of approved photographs, videos, articles and other digital resources.
  1. Communications and Promotion
  • Support the Trust’s wider communication and awareness-raising activities through its e-newsletter Papilio and other avenues.
  • Help promote fundraising appeals, donations, partnerships and opportunities for supporters to become involved.
  • Ensure consistency of tone, visual identity and key messages across digital channels.
  • Suggest new ideas and opportunities to increase the Trust’s visibility and impact.
  • Work with Trustees to ensure material is appropriately checked and approved before publication where necessary.
  1. Monitoring and Reporting
  • Monitor basic website and social media performance, including visitor numbers, reach and engagement.
  • Provide short updates to Trustees on digital communication activity and progress at each board meeting (currently 3 times per year).
  • Recommend practical improvements based on audience interest and performance.
  • Maintain appropriate account security, copyright standards and data protection practices.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Strong written English and the ability to produce clear, engaging content.
  • Familiarity with common social media platforms and content creation.
  • Basic experience updating websites or confidence in learning a content management system.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • An eye for good-quality photography, design and visual presentation.
  • An interest in wildlife, butterflies, biodiversity or environmental conservation.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with a small team of volunteer Trustees.

Desirable

  • Experience using WordPress or a similar website management system.
  • Experience managing social media for a charity, conservation organisation or community group.
  • Basic knowledge of image editing, Canva or other design tools.
  • Familiarity with website analytics, SEO and social media scheduling tools.
  • Experience writing articles, blogs, newsletters or promotional content.
  • An understanding of conservation science or natural history.

What Success Would Look Like

The aim is to establish a consistent, professional and engaging online presence for the Trust, demonstrated through:

  • A website that is regularly updated with relevant news and project information.
  • An active and informative social media presence.
  • Increased awareness of the Trust’s international conservation work.
  • Stronger engagement with existing supporters and greater visibility among new audiences.
  • Effective communication of conservation achievements, challenges and opportunities to get involved.

Working Arrangements

This is a flexible role that can be carried out remotely. The individual will work with other members of the Trust and its international conservation network as needed.

The role is primarily concerned with content creation, editorial management and digital communications, rather than technical website development or IT support.

The expected time commitment, publishing frequency and any remuneration will be agreed in advance, taking into account the individual’s availability and the Trust’s resources.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to international butterfly conservation by helping a specialist charity communicate its work more effectively.

The role would suit someone who enjoys writing, digital communications, wildlife photography and storytelling, and who would welcome the opportunity to use those skills to support the conservation of some of the world’s most remarkable butterflies.

To express an interest, in the first instance please write an email to the Chair (martin@sbbt.org.uk) briefly describing your qualifications and the reasons for your interest.
