Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) by artist John Gale
John Gale has recently released this stunning limited edition piece of art depicting the Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) and the caterpillar food plant Aristolochia dielsiana. The images are based on captive and field observations made in Popondetta, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, June 2023.
The Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing is considered endangered by the IUCN, being restricted to two populations in approximately 100 km2 (40 sq. miles) rainforest near Popondetta, and the Managalas Plateau, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.
John has very kindly offered to donate approximately £50 to the Swallowtail & Birdwing Butterfly Trust for the conservation of Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing, which is found only in Papua New Guinea.
