China news agency Xinhua and the BBC have reported three people jailed and fined by a Jinan court for illegally importing 2,800 dead butterflies from Malaysia and the Philippines in 2016. Bought online and posted to China disguised as clothing, the haul included the endangered Luzon Peacock Swallowtail, listed on CITES Appendix 1, one of only three butterflies given such protection. Many other CITES listed specimens were imported without a license in China’s biggest ever butterfly smuggling case.
