SBBT’s Kinabalu Birdwing project headed by Stephen Sutton is to benefit from an HSBC Amanah grant to teach young people about the birdwing’s importance as a flagship species in this UNESCO World Heritage site in Sabah. Amongst other activities, they will create a traditional Dusun dance based around the butterfly’s courtship behaviour.

SBBT Trustees recently visited the Stratford Butterfly Farm, where the stunning display is from captive-reared stock. Stratford supports the Homerus Alliance, set up to save Jamaica’s endangered Homerus Swallowtail, the Western Hemisphere’s largest butterfly and a target species for the Trust.  Exploratory discussions focused on how we might assist this excellent cause.

SBBT is delighted that Prof Dick Vane-Wright has agreed to become our Honorary Advisor on Butterfly Taxonomy. Formerly curator of the world’s largest collection of butterflies and other insects at London’s Natural History Museum, Dick now writes on global conservation and development as well as butterflies and teaches at universities in Canterbury.

SBBT is pleased to announce the publication of post descriptions for two positions: Hon Treasurer and Hon Secretary. Details may be found by following the links in Opportunities on the Trust’s website. The Trust would particularly welcome expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced individuals with an interest in natural history, especially butterflies.
